On eating Thai food
Growing up Thai in America meant growing up eating homemade Thai food that my mom cooked everyday, which meant I really just wanted to eat pasta and burgers all the time (looking back now, I’m so grateful that my mom learned to cook ziti and chicken parm, just for me).
Living in NYC for five years, I’ve rarely decided to eat out at Thai restaurants or order Thai delivery (if...

Jenny Boully's "A Short Essay On Being" →
This extremely well-written essay really captures some of the challenges and cultural quirks that I experienced growing up Thai (or in Boully’s case, half-Thai) in America. Let me particularly call out the fact that pad Thai is not a dish I ever considered “authentic” Thai food, let alone a meal that Thai citizens would order on a regular basis. To me, pad Thai (pronounced more...

A week ago, I signed a lease for an apartment in Bushwick that was formally a half way house—a place where people who used to be addicted to heroin go to ‘sober up’. After months of commuting to work together, Kate Ray and I are moving in together to work on kommons.com. We are thrilled to…

Video #2 from Outside Lands = rediscovering my love for hula hooping. After this video, a SF Chronicle photographer came up to me and asked to take my picture, because “anyone who can hula hoop and drink wine simultaneously” is, apparently, a badass. The paper ended up using another girl’s hula hooping picture anyway. You win some…
First in a series of really delayed videos (recorded by Max) from San Fran. Video #1 = The Strokes at Outside Lands on 7/14.

You can write a letter to yourself ten years ago....
Ten years ago, I would’ve been 12, in the awkward throes of middle school/early teenage life when I fretted most about my appearance and about fitting in. I’d probably say something along the lines of “Stop worrying. You’ll grow into your body and you will slowly find out who you are and what you like over the next ten years.”
Ask me anything
A coworker of mine created this short animation. Interesting sense of humor, no?
